"BAND: Splitfire FROM: Essex borders WHO ARE THEY?: Joe (vocals/guitar), Tom (bass), Luke (drums) SOUNDS LIKE: Paul Weller selling some smashing fruit and veg daaahn the Ridley Road circa 1976 SPLITFIRE make brilliant barrow boy pub rock so authentic you can almost taste the warm beer, whiskey and Woodbines. The sharp-suited three-piece might look like they’ve just stepped out of Quadrophenia, but their skinny-tied swagger is well vindicated by some anthemic power pop gems wrapped tighter than a pair of shrink-to-fit Levi’s. With a frontman who sounds like the lovechild of Paul Weller and Mark Perry, a bass player bouncier than a Bruce Foxton feather-cut and a drummer with the madcap genius of Keith Moon, they’re sure to stir up a fair bit of bovver. Imagine the youthful exuberance of early Supergrass, the slick stylistics of The Jam and the paranoia of the New Town Neurotics and you’ll be close; all punchy, down-and-out in surburbia, mod laments to leave you winded on the dancefloor but begging for more."

"SPLITFIRE have got a clutch of female fans screaming down the front every time their name is mentioned this evening, and it soon becomes apparent that this reaction is entirely justified. The band have an average age of 17 and looking sharp in pinstripe suits.Their own brand of nu-mod is as essential as it is infectious. They are clearly the youngest but most able of the bands with drummer Luke as tight as the proverbial gnats chuff, bassist Tom peeling off the fills with ease and frontman/guitarist Joe a born frontman and already consumate guitarist. Seriously, the record industry should be crawling all over these boys. They have the talent, the songs and enough attitude to kick the Mcfly’s of this world into dadrock territory. "What a shame" is a bouncy riot-along and is an obvious hit record. "Myspace" included a hilarious take on 10cc’s "Dreadlock Holiday" ("I don’t like Myspace, i love it!). Splitfire quite simply left all the other bands standing this evening!"

SPLITFIRE - WELCOME TO THE NEW GENERATION "Splitfire I’m convinced are going to be huge. The sharp-dressed 3 piece have bags of talent and at only 17 years old, still have bags of time to hone their already advanced song writing skills. Their influences are obvious - The Jam are their key reference point, but they’re no rip-off. Guitarist and singer Joe is a star, but you can tell he means it when he sings, and he plays a mean SG. The rhythm section of Luke (drums) and Tom (Bass) are bang on the button and sold as a rock. This demo, despite lacking the sparkle a decent producer would afford them (but all in good time, boys) does the job of showing what they’re capable of. In The Sunshine is punchy, punky and full of attitude, Today’s The Day is more of the same - great harmonies and a catchy chorus - 3 minutes of pure mod-pop. Initial Verdict is very close to the The Jam, but is my favourite on the CD - a brilliant guitar melody and Weller harmonies bring back some great memories from the late 70’s! This is nu-mod - jump on this wagon before it rolls into arena territory!" |
